14th December 2016 (Wednesday) – Port Macquarie to Yamba
Port Macquarie to Yamba
We travelled up to Yamba through Kemsey,
Nambucca, Coffs Harbour and Grafton, stopping off at Nambucca to visit the Information
Centre, plus partake in a coffee and cookie at the Boatshed and Cafe. We also stopped in Coffs Harbour for an additional tourist map to
cover the rest of the trip. The free maps offered by the Information Centres
are excellent in providing road details as well as key attractions. The road
north, Pacific Highway (A1), is being extensively developed to turn it into a motorway
with billions of dollars being spent carving out new sections. Fortunately most
of the work is to the side of the existing highway so disturbances and delays
are minimal.
We were staying at the Sun Motel in Yamba a
couple of hundred yards from the water’s edge. The accommodation was very
comfortable and we were provided with breakfast in our room for only $7 each –
great value.
Yamba sits on the edge of the Clarence River estuary with a number
of sandy beaches and a well-protected harbour area, although mainly for private
yachts.

We took a stroll around the coast, checked the water temperature and walked up to the
lighthouse.

For dinner we ate at the locally recommended fish and chip shop
called “Whatso”. This is rather unique in our experience catering for both the
take-away and restaurant clients with seating only outside but with live music.
We both had red snapper, vegetables and sweet potatoes and excellent choice.
