2nd January 2017 Margaret River to Pemberton

Margaret River to Pemberton

We drove out of Margaret River a little way south and joined the Rosa Brook road going west to Nannup through the Blackwood State Forest. Nannup was a quaint little town.  The town is now accessed via a newly improved road that has drawn significantly more visitors and new residents to the area. We stopped for tea and a small snack in Nannup and had a long conversation with a couple of locals.

We then drove onto Manjimup along the Graphite Road and spotted about three emus.  In Manjimup we visited the Timber Museum, forestry being the main industry of the area.

This park also doubled as a picnic and fun park for the kids.

....then a bit of fun

....and even more fun

The drive from Manjimup to our hotel in Pemberton took only a further 30-40 minutes.

By the time we checked in at Pemberton we were getting quite warm and needed to cool down a tad. Fortunately I spotted a couple getting out of their car with swim suits on and towels wrapped around their waists. I made enquiries and learnt that one could take a fresh water swim in Big Brook Dam only 5 km away. This dam is located in Pemberton Forest Park, which is largely composed of Karri trees. So off we went and found the dam; a really great stretch of water within the forest with benches and tables and ideal for cooling one down.

On the way back to the hotel we spotted the golf course, although it looked as though it hadn’t been used for a few years. Strangely it had sand covered greens. We later discovered that this is not uncommon and the sand is impregnated with oil to make for flatter greens.

In the evening we dined at the Pemberton Hotel, which was part of the accommodation. We had been warned not to eat at the Indian restaurant and seeing the lack of clientele I guess it was a wise move.
